Welcome to The Travelling Folk (TTF) website. We are a folk club consisting of a collection of singers and musicians based mainly in West Kent and East Sussex. We don't meet regularly in one venue but gather in pre-selected pubs around the area of West Kent/East Sussex on the first and third Thursdays of each month to enjoy ourselves in a common interest and to bring folk music to those who may not have had the opportunity of experiencing a live folk session before.
Travelling Folk was started by the late John Smedley and has been rolling along quite successfully since October 1983. Many of us have been involved since the mid eighties.
As well as the first and third Thursday sessions, we have a number of specials including entertainment for disadvantaged/disabled groups for example the Care Village at Toys Hill and a dementia care home in Pembury.
Every year we hold an away-break when we converge on a pub for a weekend with caravans and tents, and armed with instruments, music and our voices - not to mention the wobbly log! These are normally held at The Laughing Fish at Isfield.
Our sessions are a balance of song and music with a 'lively' slant and are held in the bar area of the pubs. We do not believe in playing and singing to ourselves in back rooms as we try to involve the locals. We are friendly and supportive to newcomers and welcome a fresh face whether a singer, musician or listener. Our approach is structured but informal and material doesn't have to be folk in the purest sense, or even folk at all. Music Hall, blues, classical, etc. are all accepted in good spirit.
