MARGARET BORLEY'S TIRELESS EFFORTS HAVE INSPIRED MANY PLAYERS, LIKE GREAT BRITAIN SENIOR INTERNATIONAL, ALEX MALIHOUDIS

"Having discovered the sport as part of a family holiday, MARGARET BORLEY returned to Britain and over the next 20 years was instrumental in making Tonbridge a centre of baseball excellence that has produced no less than 12 players who have gone on to represent Great Britain at various international levels.
Many players, like Great Britain senior international ALEX MALIHOUDIS, have been inspired by her passion for the game. MALIHOUDIS is widely considered the best home-grown position player.
He was also one of the original Tonbridge Bobcats, a member of a team that won the national championship in their first two years.
To give an idea of the nature of the honour bestowed upon BORLEY, among others signing the ball around the world were all-time stars of the game including Hall of Famer and Venezuelan legend Luis Aparacio, Japanese baseball hitting champion Shigeo Nagashima, Korean baseball legend Sun Dong Yeol and Vera Clemente, the widow of Puerto Rican Hall of Farmer Roberto Clemente.
The tour illustrates the worldwide popularity of baseball, both at the professional and grass-roots levels. It included stops at professional baseball games and MLB International-sponsored grass-roots baseball events and festivals.
"The world-wide journey of the All-Star Game baseball is a true barometer of the international appeal of major league baseball," said baseball commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig.
"This year's All-Star game in Seattle will highlight the international flavour of the game, as seen in the global fan interest, international diversity of our players and well-travelled All-Star game baseball"."
